HISTORY OF THE CHURCH
The Church of Empowerment (formally known as Tabernacle of Life) was founded March 13, 1993 by Pastor Wilfert Lee. The first meeting took place at his home on 4147 Russell Boulevard Apartment A in St. Louis, Missouri with 10 people in attendance. The first full service took place at the Best Western hotel located on Lindell Boulevard. There were approximately 60 people in attendance in that first full service. We worshipped there until the hotel needed the space on Sundays for events. We moved from the hotel back to the apartment where we worshipped for one Sunday. Later, Pastor Claudette Mitchell made her church available to us for our worship at 4200 N Taylor. We worshipped there approximately two years before we purchased the building at 4173 Fair Avenue. The building had to be renovated prior to worship, which took approximately seven months. We celebrated on our second anniversary when we held our first worship service in our newly renovated building.
In January 2006 the Lord instructed Bishop Lee to change the name of the church to “The Church of Empowerment”. The reason behind the change was this is our purpose as a church to empower people with inspiration, perseverance, and purpose in their lives. As teachers of the word of God, people will be empowered to discover and pursue their purpose for the call of God in their lives.
This mission is defined by our purpose and that is to empower the total person (mind, soul, and body) for the work of the kingdom of God in the earth. Our kingdom calling is to become community involved so that our neighbors both near and far will know there is a ministry that really cares about the public. It is our aim to assist in developing wholesome family values through programs and outreach ministries within the church and community.
